Explore the island’s rich archaeological history, from Neolithic field systems and Iron Age promontory forts, to the site of St. Colman’s 7th century monastery or Cromwell’s Castle. Enjoy the wildlife, wildflowers and spectacular Connemara scenery on the way.

Inishbofin provides breeding grounds for many species of birds. One of the rarest is the corncrake, which still breeds successfully here due to the traditional farming methods and local conservation initiatives.
Other Irish birds breeding here include terns, lapwings, choughs and skylarks. Autumn provides excellent birding opportunities with rare passage migrants being observed.
The Dolphin Hotel runs popular bird watching breaks in Spring and Autumn, plus the Corncrake Festival in May.
Inishbofin can boast some of the most beautiful beaches in Ireland, having several white sandy beaches with crystal clear water, great for swimming and snorkelling.
There are two ‘Green Coast’ beaches only a 10 minute walk from the Dolphin Hotel which are particularly safe for children.
Cycling is a great way to see the island as roads are quiet and picturesque. Bikes are available for hire at the pier and at the bike hire centre next to the Dolphin Hotel.
Hosting a fine collection of old photographs, farming and fishing tools, the museum gives a fascinating insight into island life. There are also local crafts and photographs for sale.
The west of Ireland has long been recognised as one of the most exciting sea fishing destinations. Its location on the edge of the European continental shelf with inshore waters warmed by the North Atlantic Drift, ensures a rich and varied marine life, with around 80 species of fish present.
Local boats, fully equipped and registered, can be chartered for a full or half day angling trip.
