Activities

 

Swimming and Snorkelling

Inishbofin has several white sandy beaches with crystal clear water. The two beaches at the East End of the island are particularly safe for children. Swimming lessons are available for adults and children during the summer season.

 

Walking

Visitors can choose easy walks along quiet roads or more strenuous mountain or cliff walks, enjoying the spectacular Connemara scenery on the way. There are many archaeological sites including Bronze Age stone terraces and field systems and Iron Age promontory forts. The ruins of a 14th Century chapel can be seen at the site of the present-day graveyard, and some 7th Century stone crosses and 2 holy wells survive from the original St. Colman’s Abbey. Cromwell’s Castle stands at the mouth of the spectacular harbour.

 

Cycling

Cycling is a great way to see the island as roads are quiet and picturesque.

Bikes are available for hire at the pier and at the bike hire centre next to the Dolphin Hotel.

 

Bird watching

Inishbofin provides breeding grounds for many species of birds. One of the rarest is the corncrake, which has been breeding here for many years. Its distinctive call can be heard late at night. Other breeding birds include terns, lapwings, choughs and skylarks. Rare passage migrants have been observed in autumn. The Dolphin Hotel runs bird watching courses in May and October. …more…

 

Inishbofin Heritage Museum & Souvenir Shop

The museum gives an insight into island life in a bygone age. It contains the contents of a traditional cottage, many old photographs and writings, old farming and fishing implements. Entry is free.

 

Traditional Music

Inishbofin is well-known for its traditional music, having a wealth of local talent. Regular music sessions take place in summer. Traditional music concerts are held at the Dolphin Hotel every Tuesday during July and August...more….

 

Scuba diving

With some of the clearest waters in Ireland, Inishbofin is well-known as a great scuba diving location. The Scuba dive centre on Inishbofin offers the following courses: Discover scuba, PADI Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Night Diver and speciality courses. The Dolphin Hotel has a drying room for wet gear.

Overlooking the new pier, facilities include:

Country Market

Island market selling delicious home-made baking, organic vegetables, jewellery and hand-made cards. Takes place every Wednesday during the summer months.

Boats can be chartered for deep-sea angling trips or trips to the neighbouring islands of Inishark and Inishturk.
